We'd like to call your attention to a performance this Friday (02/10) of the Sensorium Saxophone Orchestra, 8pm at the Douglass Street Music Collective. Very heavy free composition by Ben Miller - extremely cool and very challenging.

The above picture is Kevin Shea, a friend of ours from the highly-recommended avant group Mostly Other People Do the Killing.
Kevin almost lost his eye several days ago after a hit at University of the Streets (a LES shithole we will NOT link to) with Talibam!. Here's the story from bassist Tom Blancarte, as posted on BrooklynVegan:
"Breaking news to all musicians in NYC who might be playing at University of the Streets in the East Village:
I just played there with Talibam!, Tim Dahl and Moppa Elliott, and when we were finished, the owner and her son told us that we owed them 50 dollars. When we told them we didn't owe them anything, her son punched my friend Kevin in the face with keys in his hand! He came close to losing his left eye! Please boycott this place, they are bad, bad people."
We've verified this story, by the way - no rumor-mongering here. No doubt the fallout from this is only just beginning, but we're officially throwing full support behind Kevin on this, and please pass the word along - this is absolute bullshit, and there is no way anyone in NYC or anywhere else should allow something like this to happen - this pathetic excuse for a venue needs to be shut down. Now.

from the Awakening Orchestra site:
Many thanks to the gracious Barbara Kotler for the images herein; it appears that a tremendous photographic eye runs in the family (reference Dana Kotler's fantastic pics from a 2009 hit here) - audio coming soon, we hope.

Good Lord, February already and me without my shovel.
After three days spent last week coaxing the cat out of his new favorite hiding place (an economy-sized box of Strawberry Newtons), it's high time to get back on the horse and tell you about what the band and I have coming up:
Firstly, we're excited to come back at you this Thursday with alice. Thinks Coffee, Volume II: alice. Might Prefer a Nice Herbal Tea, courtesy my good friends down at Think Coffee on Mercer. As part of our monthly residence there, the gang and I will be back around 8 with our usual combination of rockin' music, witty banter, and L.L. Bean-worthy homemade undergarments:

Also, we're proud to announce that this Saturday, in a gesture dearer to our hearts than Ms. Middleton's engagement ring, we'll be revisiting the Lily Pad in Cambridge - er, that's Boston, my people - in alice. Rocks Boston Like Mitt Romney Rocks a Fundraiser. For the first time since 2008, I'll be bringing the troops back to the Cradle of Liberty to remind our Puritan City that (a) she's missing a stiff dose of alice., and (b) Mitt Romney's family values ain't got nothing on an old-timey Sweet Child o' Mine:

Hope to see you out there, my peeps. Stay warm and dry, and make sure you've got an extra shovel in the trunk. Er, for the snow.
Smooches,
a.
